Wheelchair Ramps and Handicapped Ramps
What will be the function of your wheelchair ramp?
- Will it be for someone to propel a wheelchair independently on?
- Will it be for someone to mobilize a scooter or electric wheelchair on?
- Will someone be walking on it with a cane or a walker?
These crucial questions help Gregg Frank and Karen Frank use their experience as occupational therapist and physical therapist to assess the best wheelchair ramp material and layout to promote safe and convenient access to homes, automobiles, commercial buildings, etc. The guidelines developed by the American Disabilities Act are very helpful however they may or may not apply to your individual needs. Basic assumptions of requiring one foot of ramp for every foot of rise may result in a ramp that is too steep for an elderly person who has experienced a stroke to propel a wheelchair on, however that same ramp may be too long for an athletic paraplegic who would prefer to have less of his driveway or yard covered by a wheelchair ramp. Depending on your individual situation, a stair lift or vertical lift may be a better option for you.
Most of the ramps that are installed by our staff of Back Home Safely are in New Jersey. Although the climate in NJ is relatively moderate, we still have to consider annual snow, ice, rain, and sunshine. Some materials are more slippery than others, and some are easier to shovel than others. Some materials require annual power washing and sealing while others are maintenance free. These factors are considered when choosing a wheelchair ramp material that will be used in NJ.
We provide ramps that will provide maintenance free access for many years!
